The ongoing war and occupation in Ukraine have not only destroyed infrastructure but also deeply affected the mental health and emotional stability of civilians. Prof. Andreyanna Ivanchenko’s study provides profound insights into the psychological trauma, coping mechanisms, and restoration methods among Ukrainians from the de-occupied Kharkiv region.


๐Ÿ” Key Highlights of the Research

·         ๐Ÿงฉ Participants: 3,779 Ukrainians aged 6–87 from the Kharkiv region who lived under Russian occupation.

·         ๐Ÿง  Research Focus: Assessment of mental health degradation during occupation and development of recovery strategies.

·         ๐Ÿ“Š Study Period: September 2022 – September 2023.

·         ๐Ÿง♀️ Demographics: 2,065 females, 874 males, and 840 children.


Major Findings

·         High Psychological Impact: Severe stress, anxiety, trauma, and emotional exhaustion were prevalent across all age groups.

·         Deferred Life Syndrome (DLS): A psychological state of postponed living caused by prolonged occupation and uncertainty.

·         Physical and Emotional Symptoms:

o    Sleep disturbances, flashbacks, and isolation.

o    Psychosomatic issues: headaches, fatigue, digestive disorders, and skin conditions.

·         Children’s Trauma: Fear, nightmares, behavioral changes, and withdrawal from learning or play activities.


๐ŸŒฑ Recovery and Healing Techniques

To support mental health recovery, Prof. Ivanchenko and her team implemented diverse therapeutic interventions:

·         Trauma-focused therapy and Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT).

·         Bio-suggestive and relaxation techniques to manage stress.

·         Psychoeducation and awareness programs.

·         Creative approaches for children – art therapy, play therapy, and fairy-tale storytelling.

·         Group therapy and family involvement for emotional reinforcement.

Result: 73% of participants demonstrated significant improvement in mental and emotional well-being.

Prof. Andreyanna Ivanchenko, Ph.D., Doctor of Psychological Sciences, serves at Kyiv M. P. Dragomanov National Pedagogical University and Kharkiv Institute “Interregional Academy of Personnel Management.” With over 40 years of teaching experience, she has authored 130+ research papers and presented 50+ international abstracts. She is also a Reiki Master/Teacher, integrating Eastern healing philosophies into modern psychology. Her research focuses on Crisis Psychology, Creativity, Psychosomatics, Stress Resistance, and Psycho-bioenergy.
